Renters Insurance Protects Your Belongings

If you own your home, you need a homeowner’s policy to protect your home and its contents. If you rent a house, condominium, townhouse, or apartment, your landlord will generally have a policy that covers the building. However, your landlord’s policy will not cover your belongings that are in the home or on the property. Renters insurance protects your belongings in the event of a fire, a theft, or other unforeseen events.

Many people do not think about protecting their belongings, until it is too late. They assume that the landlord’s policy will cover the contents of the structure, but that is not the case at all. Renters insurance is very affordable. For just pennies a day, you can protect all of your possessions. If you purchase your policy from the same company that you have your car insurance or life insurance, you will generally qualify for a discount as well. Whether your home is burglarized, there is water damage due to plumbing problems, or the structure catches fire, you will be covered. The insurance will also pay for you to stay in a hotel and eat in restaurants while your home is being rebuilt. The policies do not cover water damage from floods, but additional flood insurance can be purchased at a reasonable cost.

What would you do if someone was injured while visiting your home? If you rent, your landlord’s policy on the home will not generally cover for such things. Renters insurance will. If a friend or a relative is visiting, and he or she is injured in your home or on the property that your home is on, your policy will pay for the injuries. Such a policy will also pay legal expenses, if you should be sued by someone who was injured in or around your home, even if the injuries are caused by you, a family member who lives in the home, or a pet.
